What is BeachHacks?

What is BeachHacks?

BeachHacks is a 24-hour event at California State University, Long Beach where over 700 students come together and create technical projects for 24 hours. Teams can compete for prizes, connect with industry sponsors, and participate in workshops.We are dedicated to providing an enriching and inclusive space for all students to learn, network, and prepare for careers in tech. As a federally-designated Minority Serving Institution, we believe through events like these, we can empower our students to achieve excellence through collaboration and innovation.

Role

As the lead UX/UI Designer for BeachHacks, my responsibilities extended beyond creating the visual interface; I played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration across diverse departments. Working closely with directors from various teams, I actively contributed to the development of the BeachHacks website. Besides providing guidance to fellow UX/UI Designers, I also facilitated the creation of essential elements such as user flows, wireframes, and UI components. Moreover, my role also involved effective communication with developers to translate design concepts into a polished and functional end product, emphasizing the importance of a cohesive and collaborative approach in bringing the website together.
As the Lead UX/UI Designer, I led the design team in creating the visual interface and user experience for the BeachHacks website, working closely with the technical team to bring it to life. I guided fellow designers and helped create key elements like user flows, wireframes, and UI components. A big part of my role was collaborating with developers to turn design ideas into a polished, functional website, ensuring a seamless and teamwork-driven process from start to finish.

Reflection

Designing the BeachHacks website was a rewarding yet challenging experience due to the limited number of designers on the team. Balancing various design aspects demanded efficient multitasking and collaboration. I learned the importance of effective communication especially with directors and developers. As my first hackathon, this experience not only strengthened my design skills but also highlighted the importance of adaptability and resourcefulness in achieving impactful outcomes within a collaborative team setting. The success of the project stands as a testament to the team's resilience, marking a significant milestone in my journey as a designer.
